High tariffs on China-made products drove U.S. imports from the world’s second-largest economy to a 16-year low in June — yet the dramatic shift hasn’t put a big dent in America’s overall trade deficit.

The U.S. trade deficit narrowed in June on a sharp drop in consumer goods imports, and the trade gap with China shrank to its lowest in more than 21 years, the latest evidence of the imprint on global commerce President Donald Trump is making with sweeping tariffs on imported goods.

The Commerce Department reported Tuesday that the U.S. trade deficit with China fell to $9.5 billion in June, marking its narrowest in 20 years. The trade deficit with China has declined for five consecutive months, narrowing by 70% to $22.2 billion. Imports from China also fell to $18.9 billion, the lowest it’s been since 2009.
