Despite being well-received by critics and fans, Sleeping Dogs never managed to become a franchise. A spin-off, Triad Wars, was canceled during its beta, and developer United Front Games shut down in 2016. A Sleeping Dogs Definitive Edition was released in 2014.

Hollywood actor Simu Liu, most famously known for playing the lead role in Marvel's Shang-Chi, has confirmed he is in talks regarding the Sleeping Dogs movie rights. In a reply to a fan on X who shared a gameplay video of Sleeping Dogs' combat, Liu mentioned, "Working with the rights holders to bring Sleeping Dogs to the big screen!"

Marvel star Simu Liu says it’s his dream to make a Sleeping Dogs movie happen, followed by a new Sleeping Dogs game. Earlier this month, actor Donnie Yen said the film adaptation of Square Enix ‘s 2012 crime game – which was first announced back in 2017 – had effectively been cancelled.

The dogs are well and truly barking after IGN reports that Simu Liu is on board to produce and star in an adaptation of the much-loved video game Sleeping Dogs. The news comes just days after the Marvel star let slip he'd wanted to bring the game to life and finally see the original title get a video game sequel that the world had been waiting for.

It turns out things are a little further ahead than that. A source close to the project has told IGN that the Sleeping Dogs movie is in development, and we’re hearing Simu Liu, who plays Shang-Chi in Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, is producing and set to play the lead role of Wei Shen.
