Japan's Defense Ministry sent troops on Wednesday to the northern prefecture of Akita to help contain a surge of bear attacks that have horrified residents in the mountainous region.

Following a spike in bear sightings and fatal attacks across Japan, the military was called in to help trap bears as local authorities struggle to cope with the wave of attacks.
