The Clemson Tigers have reportedly decided on head coach Dabo Swinney's future amid a disappointing 3-4 start.
Swinney signed a 10-year, $115 million extension in 2021, which runs through the 2031 season. If the Tigers were to make a change at head coach this year, the program would owe Swinney a $60 million buyout. It's the 8th-highest buyout in college football.
Clemson has been the most transfer portal-averse program in the FBS outside of the service academies. Swinney did add a trio of transfers to the 2025 roster, including former Purdue defensive end Will Heldt, who currently leads the team in sacks. It’s the most Swinney has brought on in a single offseason, and a nod to an evolving philosophy.
The Tigers fell to 3-4 overall and 2-3 in conference play with Saturday's 35-24 loss to SMU. It marked the program's fifth straight home loss to Power Four competition dating back to last fall and means Clemson's in danger of suffering its first losing season under Swinney since 2010 unless things get corrected quickly.
Clemson’s journey into unfamiliar territory under coach Dabo Swinney added another chapter Saturday with a 35-24 home loss to SMU. The Tigers 3-4 (2-3 ACC) have now lost five straight home games against power conference teams dating back to October 2024 and are 1-3 at home this season.
Clemson is off in Week 9 after losing to SMU in its only home game in October The Tigers will use the open date to try to have a "November to remember" by winning five straight games. Clemson will host Duke (4-3, 3-1) on Nov. 1 (noon ET, ACC Network) at Memorial Stadium in Week 10. This is Clemson's final regular-season off week.
Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney addressed questions about his coaching staff during Monday’s media call, making it clear he doesn’t plan to make any changes during the open week.
Heading into the 2025 college football season, the Clemson Tigers were expected to be one of the top national championship contenders in the nation. Unfortunately for Dabo Swinney and company, the season has not progressed quite like that.
