Poomsae, which translates as "patterns", serves the same function as kata in karate, namely the exercise of set forms. As such, it is distinct from the sparring, or "martial" side of taekwondo.

Poomsae is the taekwondo practice of form, set to a pattern of defense and attack motions. As a competitor earns a new belt, they are introduced to new techniques that can contribute to this pattern.

Around 1,500 athletes are expected to vie for honors in the SMART National Poomsae Taekwondo Championships on Oct. 19-20 at the Rizal Memorial Coliseum.

Poomsae (forms), known as attack and defense techniques against imaginary opponents, accounted for two of the six gold medals produced by PH taekwondo team in last month’s SEA Games in Cambodia.
