Marine mammal researchers are investigating the cause of death for a humpback whale that washed up on the Jersey Shore Wednesday morning. The dead whale was first spotted floating in the ocean around 7:50 a.m., the Marine Mammal Stranding Center said. About a half-hour later, waves brought the animal onto shore.

SANDY HOOK — A dead humpback whale washed ashore on April 1 along a beach at Sandy Hook, according to the Marine Mammal Stranding Center of Brigantine. The stranding center received a report of a dead, floating whale at 7:10 a.m., staff wrote on the organization's Facebook page.
