Denmark will increase its military footprint in Greenland, Danish Defense Minister Troels Lund Poulsen said on Wednesday (January 14).

Denmark said a “fundamental disagreement” remained after a high-stakes meeting with the US over Greenland as several countries including Germany said they’d send military personnel to the Arctic island.

Greenland is 836,000 square miles, more than five times the size of California, and it’s mostly ice. President Trump has been threatening to commandeer the island, complaining that Denmark has neglected the Arctic territory.

Denmark is sending extra troops, aircraft and ships to Greenland and said more would come later from Nato allies ahead of a crunch meeting with senior US officials over President Donald Trump’s desire to take control of the island.

The Danes say the deployment of aircraft, ships and soldiers is part of an ongoing effort to better protect the island and the Arctic.

Denmark’s top diplomats said they held their ground in a crucial meeting with the U.S. vice-president and secretary of state over the future of Greenland. At the same time, the small European country drafted help from some of its larger neighbours to send a message to the U.
