The attack comes amid a new chill in relations between Moscow and Washington after Russia condemned the US seizure of an oil tanker in the North Atlantic.

Russia’s Defense Ministry announced it carried out a precision strike last week using its hypersonic Oreshnik missile, claiming the attack disabled a major Ukrainian aviation repair and drone production facility in the Lviv region.

Andrii Melnyk, Ukraine's Permanent Representative to the United Nations, has said he expects the UN Security Council, convened over large-scale Russian strikes – including the use of the Oreshnik medium-range ballistic missile – to take very firm steps to stop Russian aggression.
