“Happy Gilmore,” released in 1996, was Sander and Herlihy’s second movie, following “Billy Madison.” Sandler was just exiting “Saturday Night Live.” Herlihy was Sandler’s roommate at New York University and became a lawyer before Sandler got him to stick to writing comedy. “Happy Gilmore 2,” currently sitting in the No. 1 spot in Netflix’s top 10 English-language movies, sees the return of actors like Julie Bowen (Virginia Venit), Christopher McDonald (Shooter McGavin) and Ben Stiller (Hal L.) from the first movie and is overflowing with callbacks to the first movie and celebrity cameos.
