The eruptions at Kilauea prompted closures at a national park and part of a highway because of falling glassy volcanic fragments, including ash.

Kīlauea volcano on Hawaii’s Big Island erupted on Tuesday in a nine-hour spectacular, shooting fountains of lava some 1,300 feet into the air, according to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS).

The image, which first circulated several years ago on social media, was taken during a 2016 study and resurfaced on X this week.

Hawaii Volcanoes National Park has closed the Kīlauea summit and state officials shut down the main road to the volcano.

Hawaii’s Kīlauea volcano shot fountains of lava with some more than 1,000 feet in the air at point. It prompted the USGS to assign its highest volcano level to residents and even closed nearby roads.
