Gov. Gavin Newsom unveiled his plan to redraw the state’s congressional maps in response to a Republican-led effort in Texas Thursday, setting up a standoff against a coalition of opponents.

Democrats have vowed to “fight fire with fire” since the GOP moved to add five red seats in Texas, but they face many barriers.

We're prepared to bring this battle back to Texas under the right conditions and to take this fight to the courts,” said Caucus Chair Gene Wu of Houston in a statement.

Texas Gov. Greg Abbott immediately called another special session to pass a new congressional map, after the first attempt failed due to the Texas Democrats leaving the state to deny the Republicans the opportunity to carve out additional GOP seats.
