The Gulf of Mexico will be renamed to the Gulf of America on Google Maps, the company announced on Monday, following updates from official government sources

Just days later, the Gulf of America has become a real thing.

Google announced that it would be referring to the "Gulf of Mexico" as "Gulf of America" after Trump signed an executive order changing the name. The search engine behemoth says the change follows its practice of changing names of places when they have been updated by official government sources.

Google Maps will comply with President Donald Trump's executive order to rename the Gulf of Mexico to Gulf of America. This change will only apply users in the United States.

The SS United States was poised to set sail at the end of last year on her final voyage from Philadelphia to the bottom of the Gulf of Mexico to become an artificial reef. But Coast Guard concerns have complicated the trip south.

In support of President Trump's executive orders, the Coast Guard will send additional resources to maritime borders, the military branch said Tuesday.

A minor, 3.8-magnitude earthquake struck in the Gulf of Maine on Monday, according to the United States Geological Survey. The temblor happened at 10:22 a.m. Eastern about 10 miles east of Portsmouth, N.H., data from the agency shows. U.S.G.S. data earlier reported that the magnitude was 3.9.

The change will be visible in the US but the name will remain “Gulf of Mexico” in Mexico. Outside of the two countries, users will see both names on Google Maps.

The order Trump signed instructs the Interior Department to update the Geographic Names Information System to reflect the renaming of the Gulf and remove all references to the Gulf of Mexico. It says all federal references to the Gulf of America, including on agency maps, contracts, and other documents and communications shall reflect the renaming.
