Indian authorities have shut schools and evacuated tens of thousands of people as Cyclone Montha approaches the eastern coast.

India’s east coast is prone to cyclones during the months of April and December with several small and major storms lashing the region. India faced its deadliest natural disaster in October 1999 when a super cyclone killed around 10,000 people in Odisha.

Moving at 15 kmph, the cyclone is expected to bring wind speeds up to 110 kmph and heavy rain across coastal Andhra, Odisha, and northern Tamil Nadu. The Andhra Pradesh government has imposed a night curfew and banned vehicle movement in seven coastal districts.
