As a deadline fast approaches to either charge to release two suspects in the $102 million Louvre jewel heist, the president of France's Senate Culture Committee said the museum is "not up to standard" for guarding it against other bandits.

Paris police said Wednesday that they found major security gaps at the Louvre Museum after the jewel theft last week. Paris Police Chief Patrice Faure told Senate lawmakers that old systems and delayed fixes resulted in holes in security, The Associated Press reported.

More than 100 investigators are racing to solve a daring heist at the Louvre Museum in Paris. Thieves stole centuries-old jewels worth an estimated 88 million euros, including pieces linked to 19th century queens.

Two suspects with histories of jewel thefts had been tracked for days after their DNA was recovered from the museum and were arrested shortly before one of them was set to board a flight out of the country,

The chairman of the Senate’s Committee on Culture, Laurent Lafon, said on Tuesday, after a visit to the Louvre’s security facilities, that the museum’s safety standards were “not up to what one would expect from a modern museum.

French senators have acknowledged that the Louvre's security is outdated and needs urgent upgrades. On Tuesday, a delegation visited the museum following a recent heist where thieves stole jewels worth 88 million euros in under eight minutes.
