New York City and New Jersey are under states of emergencies as torrential rain pounds the Northeast on Thursday afternoon.

New York Governor Kathy Hochul and her acting counterpart in New Jersey said they were declaring states of emergency for areas facing the threat of extreme flash floods forecast on Thursday for much of the Eastern Seaboard.

New York City officials said they are investigating a cluster of Legionnaires' disease that has caused one death and nearly two dozen illnesses.

Legionnaires' disease can be fatal, especially for older adults, smokers and those with weakened immune systems.

At least 22 people have fallen ill, including one person who has died, from Legionnaires’ disease in New York City over the last two weeks, according to the city’s health department. City health officials believe that the people most likely became ill after breathing in bacteria sprayed from a cooling tower in central Harlem.

The New York Yankees are reportedly finalizing a trade to acquire Pittsburgh Pirates closer David Bednar. The deal is pending medical review, MLB insider Jeff Passan reported, citing sources. The details of the deal were not immediately reported.
