Syria’s interim government says it has reached a landmark agreement with Kurdish-led forces to integrate them into state institutions as it tries to unify the country’s diverse communities after a decade of civil war.

The deal to integrate the SDF into the new Syrian state could placate Turkey. The SDF and the Turkish-backed Syrian National Army, a rebel group that fought alongside HTS in the civil war, clashed in December following the overthrow of Assad. Turkey and its SNA allies began on-and-off military operations against the SDF in 2016.

Syria’s interim government signed a deal Monday with the Kurdish-led authority that controlled the country’s northeast, including a ceasefire and the merging of the main US-backed force there into the Syrian army.
