Flying fox bats are the largest bats in the world, easily recognised by their fox-like faces and impressive wingspans. Unlike smaller bats that use echolocation, they depend on their sharp eyesight and strong sense of smell to find their way. When gathered in large colonies, they often let out loud, repetitive barking sounds to communicate, defend their territory, or warn others of danger. It's flying-fox birthing season and our workload is increasing daily mostly due to the rescue of flying-foxes out of large aperture anti bird netting thrown over fruit trees. However, on this occasion, it was a child's backyard soccer net that trapped poor Susan and her baby. Now in care with us and with her injuries cleaned and dressed, Susan will hopefully be able to still care for her baby whilst in rehab.
