My orchestral work Equus is entirely based on the number 5 — 5 bar phrases, 5/4 time signatures, leaps up and down of perfect fifths. The first time we hear the main theme is near the beginning, when the clarinet first spells out this little number game of fives. It’s an outrageously difficult solo, and this performance in 2015 by the brilliant Katherine Lacy and the @royalphilorchestra is probably the best I’ve ever heard it.
