Do you REALLY know what whip is? Tons of pitchers have whip and it all can look very different…because whip is simply your throwing arm reaching your hip or “finish line” in a sequence instead of all at once. That sequence (although there will always be rare exceptions needs to be elbow, wrist then fingers. If they all reach the hip at once, you are pushing, not pulling the ball, resulting in loss of velocity. This can be achieved (to some degree) with a straight arm and elbow, and is best achie

The “whip” in fastpitch softball pitching is the biomechanical foundation for generating speed, spin, and efficiency while minimizing stress on the arm. Here’s a breakdown of how it works and why it’s superior to outdated methods like the “Hello Elbow” style: 1. External Shoulder Rotation. What it is: During the downswing, the shoulder moves into external rotation as the arm prepares to accelerate. The forearm stays relaxed, creating a lever-like action. Why it’s important: External rotation ali

Every great pitcher talks about whip—but few truly understand where it comes from. The whip isn’t just about the arm circle or a flashy snap at the end. It starts from the ground up. • First, we build ground force—driving energy into the dirt and letting that energy travel through the body. • That power flows into your stride and landing. Without a strong, stable front side, you can’t decelerate or “put the brakes on.” • From there, the arm is free to whip—moving from external rotation, into int

The palm up elbow down position is critical for creating good whip, because it allows you to create forearm lag (similar to bat lag when you’re hitting) which ultimately creates your whip But a lot of pitchers really struggle feeling the palm up elbow down position. Their hands will turn to the side, elbows will turn, causing them to get stuck behind the body and essentially push the ball This is one of my favorite drills for feeling that good palm up elbow down position 👆🏻 You want to feel th

Why use a towel for the whip drill? 🥎 Because pitchers don’t need more power — they need better WHIP. A towel removes the distraction of the ball and forces: ✔️ Proper arm path ✔️ True internal rotation ✔️ Late, fast snap (not a push) ✔️ Smooth sequencing from shoulder → wrist If the towel cracks, the whip is right. If it drags… the mechanics are off. This drill teaches pitchers to feel the motion before adding speed or distance. ⚠️ Master the whip first. 📈 Speed comes after. 💬 Comment “WHIP”

One of the biggest components of your whip is the SNAP! Meaning the strong use of the wrist and fingers Believe it or not, so many pitchers leave this part out. They focus so much on going from palm up to palm down, that they end up forcing the hand turn over from the shoulder instead of actually creating an elbow lead and using wrist and fingers They tense up and muscle the ball instead of staying loose and relaxed This will take away both speed and spin Self snap drills (whether it is with a p

Need more proof of whip vs hello elbow? I could do this all day, because it’s EVERYWHERE. It’s not the “new way to pitch” it’s the right way to pitch and it’s been around forever I feel like I have featured most of the OU pitchers at this point haha. But here is another great example of whip from Nicole May You can see the beautiful palm up elbow down position, the forward wrist snap right off the back hip underneath the belly button, the hand firing out, relaxed with the palm down “But you don’

Strong but loose whip can be one of the HARDEST things for pitchers to learn So many pitchers struggle to feel that loose whip and snap, especially when they have years of tense/stiff movements in their muscle memory We all know I love to use plyo balls to work on this, but honestly this @minichutestraining parachute trainer may be my new favorite The main purpose of this parachute ball is to simulate long toss (which I LOVE), but you know me, I always use pitching tools in ways that are differe

Internal rotation is the natural whipping action of the arm that occurs just before ball release. It allows energy generated from the ground, legs, hips, and torso to transfer efficiently through the arm and into the softball. When timed correctly, internal rotation helps pitchers create more speed with less effort, improves efficiency, and reduces unnecessary stress on the shoulder and elbow. It's not about muscling the ball to the plate—it's about allowing the body to work as one connected sys

Whipping your pitch DOWN instead of forward is how you take the tension out of your shoulder. You can get more revolutions on the softball with your fingers “drumming” off the seams instead of pushing. Also, notice how no part of my body moves besides my arms? Quiet, compact movement = speed and accuracy. Breathe, whip, pitch! Make pitching easy with Seven Strong!
