New York’s bull moose have begun growing a new set of antlers that they will use for sparring, making rubs and scrapes, and attracting the attention of cows (female moose) during the fall breeding season. From May through August an adult bull’s antlers may grow up to an inch per day, making antlers the fastest growing tissue in any mammal. This video of two bull moose battling on a backroad on conservation easement lands in the northern Adirondacks was recently shared with DEC. The two moose appear to be very healthy, reflecting the overall good health of New York’s moose population. The video was taken by Jeremy Bullis.
